Gloryfikacja Stanisława Augusta jako patrona nauk i sztuk

Kompozycja inspirowana Szkołą Ateńską Rafaela przedstawia reprezentantów rzemiosł, nauk i sztuk wyzwolonych, skupionych wokół pomnika Stanisława Augusta. Obok figury monarchy widnieją między innymi duchowni, filozofowie, astronomowie, malarze i rzeźbiarze oraz alegorie Poetyki i Retoryki. Król nosi rzymską zbroję, płaszcz koronacyjny, berło i Order Orła Białego.

Stanisław August ukazany został tu jako patron nauk i sztuk. Rysunek przywodzi na myśl panującą podczas jego rządów intelektualną atmosferę, dzięki której założono Szkołę Rycerskiej. Gloryfikacja, wraz z zestawionymi szkicami architektonicznymi, przybliża też niespełnione marzenie króla o stworzeniu akademii sztuk pięknych. Jej zaczątkiem były kształcące artystów zamkowe pracownie malarstwa i rzeźby.
 

The Glorification of Stanisław August as Patron of Science and the Arts

The composition, inspired by Raphael’s School of Athens, depicts representatives of crafts, sciences and liberal arts gathered around the monument to Stanisław August. Next to the figure of the monarch are clergymen, philosophers, astronomers, painters and sculptors, as well as allegories of Poetics and Rhetoric. The king wears Roman armour, a coronation cloak, a sceptre and the Order of the White Eagle.

Stanisław August is depicted here as the patron of science and the arts. The drawing brings to mind the intellectual atmosphere that prevailed during his reign, which led to the establishment of the Corps of Cadets. The Glorification, together with the accompanying architectural sketches, also brings us closer to the king’s unfulfilled dream of creating an academy of fine arts. Its beginnings were the castle’s painting and sculpture workshops that educated artists.
