dziewczynazperla_006_430.jpgNarek Avetissian - born in 1969 is a promising zoung Armenian artist. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Erevan, he has participated in many national and international exhibitions and one man shows. In 1999 he represented Armenia in the 48th Biennale in Venice.

The "Simulacrum " project unites painting, video and music. The artist had worked on it from 2006 to 2010.It is composed of 33 variations of the famous " Girl with the Pearl" by Johannes Vermeer plus a video animation demonstrating their transformation. The music for this animation was especially composed by Vahabn Artsruni - an eminent Armenian composer. The 33 potraits of the Girl with the Pearl give you an idea of what it might have look like if she were painted by Picasso, Chagall ,Modigliani etc.
Several Armenian artists with their respective styles have also been included - among them is Minas Avetissian (the artists father and a well known Armenian painter) and Varshak Avetissian - the author's son (he was 10 years old when he painted the portrait - it is the only painting in the exhibition which has not been painted by Narek Avetissian). And finally there is the portrait of Scarlett Johansson as the "Girl with the Pearl"
The paintings are shown against the superb background of oriental rugs from the collection of Theresa Sahakian - another interesting link with Armenian heritage.
